I am the mother of three, ages six and under. We live in a small two bedroom house and to say the least space is always at a premium. I have never owned or used a highchair at home because space is an issue, and high chairs take up a great deal of space, even if they fold up (or at least the ones that were available to me when I was in the market for baby supplies were all bulky). Instead of using a high chair I got creative.
I always made do and used whatever was handy. I have buckled my kids into their carseats for meal times. I had a swing that had a tray that I'd use for dry snacks like cheerios. One of the neatest things I ever used was this little molded plastic chair called a bumbo chair, it was small and didn't take up much space and was always so convienent. It was solid plastic too so it was easy to wash if a mess was made.
I used a high chair at work. I am lucky because I get to take my kids to work. I used a second hand high chair there because I had room for one and the lady who comes to work and keeps my kids while I work always felt it was easier to feed the kids from the highchair. My kids loved it, they would sit in the highchair and munch on vanilla wafers and draw pictures in the afternoons.
I never really thought too much about having and using a high chair at home because of the space issue. I recently went to a baby shower for my sister-in-law. Her baby is almost three years younger than my youngest and six years younger than my oldest, so baby "stuff" has changed so much from when I was making baby item purchases. She and my brother also live in a small two bedroom house, but she registered for and recieved two highchairs, a regular one for use at home and a travel one for eating out. I must say I was impressed by the innovations that have been made in regards to high chairs.
The one she has for use at home folds almost flat, you can store it anywhere you can store a folding step stool. It's very easy to use too. The travel high chair she got is also easy to use and is sturdy and very compact. I think the one she is using at home is made by Svan, I must say I am jealous. I wish they made highchairs like the one she has when I was on the market for one, it sure would have been handy to have. |
